Abstract
In this chapter, Viktor Poletko considers the theoretical themes and approaches to the understanding of the interrelations among civil society, religion, and democratic institutions in Eastern Europe. He finds that much of the contemporary scholarship is unable to capture the highly nuanced sociopolitical-religious picture of the region. This chapter further aims to shed light on the debate about the prospects of safeguarding individual liberties, improving democratic practices, and strengthening civic virtues, on the one hand, and deepening the vitality of religious organizations on the other.
