Abstract
In this chapter we first deduce Newton’s law of gravitation in its local form as a preparation for comparing Newton’s and Einstein’s theories, including a discussion of tidal forces. Then we give a presentation of the main conceptual foundation of the general theory of relativity, emphasizing the principle of equivalence and the principle of relativity.
