Abstract
While the idea that each suicide only impacts 6 people has been around for decades, recent work has shown that up to 135 people and not 6 are exposed to each suicide. The effects of suicide are on a continuum in which some people are exposed (know the person who died), some are affected, and some are bereaved either short or long term. Exposure to an individual’s suicidal behavior is not limited to an individual’s family, and there is evidence that clear risks for negative outcomes exist in suicide exposed non-kin.
