The Hidden Curriculum in Doctoral Education

Abstract

Doctoral education carries with it its own rewards as well as a unique set of shared concerns arising from its challenging nature. Beyond the doctoral-specific challenges, there are added expectations (e.g. career, life post-PhD) that often greatly affect how the doctoral study experience is viewed. In this context, we take a closer look at prevailing concerns and challenges, which if left unaddressed can lead to delayed progression or attrition and/or possibly to physical exhaustion, psychological distress, or mental health challenges. Supervisory meetings and seminars formally underpin the development of research skills and subject expertise. Nevertheless, we need to appreciate the often overlooked value of the hidden curriculum, which can complement and reinforce the formal curriculum provision, leading to a more holistic doctoral experience.
