Abstract

Pericardium is a fibrous structure that surrounds whole the heart and the origin of the great arteries. Pericardial disease arise by the effüsive, constictive or neoplastic pathologies. Pericardial surgery performed mostly in the effusive or constrictive pathologies. Many types of the pericardial approaches are performed (mediastinal exploration, pericardial window opening and pericardiectomy). The surgery is challenging and multiple complications and risk factors were described. Nearly half of the cases are suffered from complications. Decision of the operation procedure should be done carefully. Sometimes total correction of the pathology may cause side effects. On the other hand recurrence is not uncommon in palliative procedures. Preventing from the complications needs sufficient evaluation and surgical abilitiy. Surgeons should not avoid chemical or mechanical support usage if necessary.
