Social Work Education in Pakistan: Analysis of Past and Present Practices

Abstract

This chapter examines the development of social work education in Pakistan. The chapter is based on a content analysis of the secondary data. The chapter is important to understand the social developments in Pakistan as the education of social work in Pakistan is becoming increasingly renowned and needed due to its exceptional services to the people. In the Pakistani society, professional social workers are expected to perform new and different tasks. Hence, this chapter focuses on the historical analysis of the social work development in Pakistan. The main objective of this paper is to identify the historical educational development in academia and its evolution. And the impact of Western concepts on the courses taught in different educational institutions. Social work education is now systematically taught at higher education institutions and practical internships are an essential part of it, although unfortunately university administrators and higher education commission did not consider it an important subject. Research and training are important part of courses but the reasons for reduced interest in social science education in Pakistan have not been examined satisfactorily.
