Abstract

Globally, coriander is the essential oil crop with the largest volume of production. The leafy vegetable use of this plant is becoming increasingly popular. Modern coriander breeding has mostly focused on the use of the fruits for industrial extraction of their essential oil, but dual-purpose coriander for fruit and leaf use, as well as coriander for leaf use only exist. Line selection is the dominating approach used so far in coriander breeding. Globally, most production of coriander still relies on landraces. The enormous genetic diversity of the species that is accessible from genebanks offers ample opportunities to develop cultivars adapted to specific usages and specific growing conditions. The fungal and bacterial pathogens causing a wilt that affects leaves and blossoms in coriander are not well understood.
