Violeta Parra’s Visual Art

Abstract

There is a detailed reading of Parra’s visual syntax in this chapter, with a reflection on the links between her signature aesthetic and the work of other modern artists. Parra’s art can be situated in relationship to key movements of the twentieth century, such as Surrealism and Pop Art. Her work is typical of modern art in the way it fundamentally questions modernity. Her employment of collage and parody, for example, typifies a wider artistic reaction to consumer culture. These aspects of her art are discussed in this chapter.
