Abstract

The inferential tests presented in Chap. 5 are concerned with identifying significant differences. If the results are not significant, the researcher fails to reject the hypothesis under test, but could never prove that the hypothesis under test was correct. This chapter looks at tests that would allow the researcher to prove that the levels of an independent variable are equivalent within a prescribed amount of similarity. As with previous test, there is a degree of confidence associated with interpreting the equivalence being analyzed. Tests of equivalence present in this chapter include confidence intervals and ratio methods associated with t-tests for the one-sample, two-sample, and paired situations. Minitab applications for evaluating the level of equivalence are presented. Also the SUPAC guidance for determining the equivalence of dissolution curves for immediate-release solid oral dosage forms is discussed.
