Abstract
In medical ultrasound, the ability to optimise image, to minimise measurement errors and to identify artefacts rely on a solid background and understanding of ultrasound physics. This chapter will introduce the basics of ultrasound physics that allows operators to carry out simple and straightforward echocardiography examinations. Important concepts such as the properties of medical ultrasound, focusing, attenuation and Doppler principles will be covered. The concept of myocardial strain will also be introduced.
