Basic Biographical Information

Su Bingqi 蘇秉琦 (1908–1997) was born in Gaoyang County, Hebei province, China, in 1908 (Wang 1997; Falkenhausen 1999). He studied history at Beiping Normal University from 1928 to 1934 before joining the archaeological team of the Society of Historical Studies (after 1936, the Institute) of the National Beiping Academy and excavating the Doujitai site in Baoji, Shaanxi province. After the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, Su was employed as a research fellow at the Institute of Archaeology under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and later, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. In 1952, he was appointed professor in the history department of Peking University, where he founded, and served as chair of, China’s first archaeology program. He was elected president of the Association for Chinese Archaeology in 1986, succeeding the former director Xia Nai (1910–1985).
