Supraventricular Tachyarrhythmia Management in Elite Athletes

Cardiac Electrophysiology

Abstract

Elite endurance athletes are at risk for the development of symptomatic tachyarrhythmias that may impair exercise performance. Therapeutic management is dictated by symptom burden with options including conservative observation, pharmacologic suppression, and catheter ablation. Although aggressive left atrial catheter ablations may “cure” the arrhythmia they may not “fix” the athlete. We describe and discuss a case whereby a relatively conservative ablation strategy is taken to treat a competitive athlete with atrial arrhythmia in order to minimize atrial scar burden for the preservation of atrial conduit and contractile function.
