Definition

Values-based consumption is the notion that consumers use attributes beyond convenience, brand, functionality, and price in deciding what to buy or not to buy. Values driven consumers buy products and services in keeping with their economic, social, and ecological concerns.

When Starbucks announced on January 29, 2017, that the company would hire 10,000 refugees over the course of the ensuing 5 years, CEO Howard Schultz may have been acting from personal feeling about the actions of President Trump in the preceding days. But he likely also intended to stimulate values-based consumption.
