Definition
Conflicts of commitment are specific types of conflict of interest. Conflict of interest is generally defined as a situation where a person is in a position of trust and authority and is supposed to decide between alternative choices rationally and with unbiased fairness but where one decision benefits the person deciding either directly or indirectly. In the case of a conflict of commitment, the difference is that the choices may be one where the decision-maker may be altruistic and not self-motivated but may still be in conflict. In these cases, a conflict may be between two or more professional commitments that will potentially affect “one’s focus of time, attention, and responsibility” (Werhane and Doering 1995, p. 51).
