Abstract
The approach of pediatricians to children and families will vary according to many circumstances, particularly by age. Adolescents are still children, The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (1990) defines “child” as “a human being below the age of 18 years”. Hence, a specific approach to adolescence complies with a general philosophy of pediatrics: that we pay attention to the age and developmental status of the patient. Interacting with adolescents is a part of the practice of most pediatricians at some time or another. Some pediatricians openly dread interacting with adolescents. Most pediatricians are happy to interact with adolescents and work hard to identify the strengths inherent in a particular teenager. Issues of privacy, confidentiality and consent will be dealt with in detail.
