Abstract

In this chapter we describe the state of the art of the trepanation in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, following the descriptions of the technique done by Johannes Scultetus and is described in ‘L’Encyclopédie’. Along these centuries the old restrictions concerning cranial trepanation recommended in the Hippocratic texts were slowly overwhelmed, particularly the fear to trepan on the cranial sutures, temples, frontal bone, areas covered by muscles, opening the dura mater and others. Finally, we describe and review the scenarios where the trepanations were carried out, in the bedroom of the patients during decades and finally in the hospitals.
