Overview

The Women’s Health and Aging Studies (WHAS) I and II were designed as two companion prospective observational cohort studies, to determine the causes, course, and consequences of functional decline and disability in older women living in the community. These studies were focused on women because they have a higher prevalence of disability in old age than men, they live longer with their disability, and they require greater use of medical and long-term care resources. The WHAS I study focused on older women who already had moderate to severe disability but were still residing in the community and was aimed at intensively studying the characteristics of this disability at a level of detail not previously attempted.
