Definition

Vascular (cardiovascular) diseases (CVDs) relate to dysfunction and diseases of heart and blood vessels (both large and small), which can manifest either as a local (e.g., heart valve disease) or systemic (e.g., atherosclerosis (See “Atherosclerosis”)) disorder. Vascular ageing See “Aging Pathology”) phenomena underlie many of these disorders.

Overview

Cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases (CVDs)(See “Cardiovascular System” and “Circulatory System”) are a leading cause of morbidity, mortality, and disability in older people. In pathophysiology, vascular ageing mechanisms and various CVD risk factors interact, atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD, (See “Atherosclerosis”)) being a common phenotype.
