Abstract

A new concept of presbyopia-correcting intraocular lens (IOL) technology has been recently developed, which has been named with the term “extended depth of focus” (EDOF) or “extended range of vision” (ERV). IOLs based on this technology provide a continuous range of functional vision without a clearly asymmetric distribution of light to foci, avoiding the presence of secondary out-of-focus images. The Mini Well Ready IOL is an aspheric EDOF IOL with an equivalent addition of +3.0 D. The optical zone diameter of this IOL is divided into three different annular zones: the inner and middle zones have different spherical aberrations with opposite signs, whereas the outer one is a monofocal zone. This has been confirmed in optical bench studies, showing similar levels of higher-order aberrations for increasing values of pupil aperture. This design provides a peculiar optical behaviour compared to other multifocal and EDOF IOLs. Currently available clinical evidence with this new type of EDOF IOL is very limited, with only two publications coming from the same research group. According to these preliminary findings, this EDOF IOL seems to provide good results at distance and intermediate vision, but more limited at near vision. Regarding photic phenomena, a smaller mean halo size and a lower mean intensity have been found in one clinical study compared to a group of eyes implanted with the low-addition hybrid multifocal IOL. More studies are still needed to confirm these initial outcomes.
