Abstract
I feel compelled to apologize to my readers, hopefully in prospect, being as bold as to leave the spheres of my learned profession and usual activity in the forthcoming pages. The anxiety of a committed citizen urges me to speak. We are being threatened by the adepts of sociology and economy with data, curves and figures. Society gets older, children are too few and people live much too long, they write, referring obviously to Europe and to areas where health systems are regarded as highly developed and birth control is exercised. In other parts of the world, influenced by the present conditions of our civilization to a lesser extent, e.g. in certain regions of Africa, the anxiety is opposite to ours: children are abundant and people’s lives are much too short. We, however, have to deal with our own problems.
