Abstract

The academic medical center in the modern era must simultaneously support medical education and research while frequently delivering complex, specialized care. The structure of an academic health care system and the methodology by which resources are allocated among the various entities significantly influence the conduct of the clinical, research, educational, and administrative functions of an academic clinical department. Ultimately, functional alignment determines the funds flow model. Success in achieving financial viability while simultaneously addressing the tripartite academic mission requires ongoing vigilance, agility, fluidity, innovation and ultimately, compromise.
