Abstract
The introduction outlines the aims, scope and rationale for the book. There has been a rekindling of interest in universities among international agencies and national governments, and higher education was included in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) agreed in 2015. Yet can higher education fulfil this ambitious role of addressing global challenges such as poverty, climate change and conflict? And what changes might consequently be needed in higher education systems and institutions? This chapter outlines the current landscape of higher education, the structure of the book as a whole, its contribution to the literature and underpinning principles.
