Pediatric Musculoskeletal Ultrasonography

Abstract

Hip and thigh ultrasonography in children has various applications in which it is the primary diagnostic tool. In neonates and infants, hip joint US is the gold standard in screening for developmental dysplasia of the hip. In older children, hip US is used to assess the joints in terms of inflammatory conditions in the course of various pathological processes that constitute the so-called irritable hip syndrome. Ultrasonography is a perfect diagnostic tool for certain hip pathologies, such as avulsion injuries, greater trochanteric pain or snapping hip. This chapter presents the technique of hip joint examination, sonographic anatomy of the region and basic pathologies that are most frequently encountered in routine practice of an ultrasonographer examining paediatric patients. The chapter also provides basic information concerning the technique of thigh evaluation with ultrasonography and discusses the most common inflammatory conditions, post-traumatic changes and focal lesions that may develop in this region.
