Abstract

This chapter explains the relationship between the work presented here and the related fields of research at the time of the research described in this book. Three large fields have impact on the presented research: ICALL, NLP and CA. Specific fields using CA for dialogue modelling are also of high relevance for this work. The current state of the art in the area of chatbots and conversational interfaces and the problems with evaluation of the dialogue quality are also discussed. The specific contributions of this research to each area are highlighted in each section.
