Abstract
This case study reports on generational differences in perceptions of leadership in Tanzania. Both senior and young leaders prefer less hierarchy and more people-oriented leadership. Traditional cultural norms of respecting your elders influence leadership perceptions, though these are slowly shifting. Many senior leaders are supporting these changes, striking a balance between providing mentoring, while supporting more consultation. Some senior leaders fear that young people may not acknowledge that they still to need to learn. Young leaders stressed their need for mentoring and trust, being given responsibilities and constructive feedback. Senior leaders as role models or mentors will only be able to guide young people part of the way. Young leaders will need to be daring and innovative, to become effective and entrepreneurial leaders in this era of change.
