Abstract

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) is one of the most common operations performed worldwide. Bile duct injury (BDI) with its devastating consequences for patients is the most feared LC complication, and its incidence has not decreased over time despite accumulating experience. To address this issue, the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgery (SAGES) formed the Safe Cholecystectomy Task Force that aims to promote a universal culture of safety in LC to reduce BDI. This biliary manual provides its readers with an excellent resource for essential knowledge relevant to the care of patients with gallbladder disease. It addresses in-depth LC safe practices all general surgeons should be familiar with.
