Definition

Dame Ann Teresa Partington’s Narrative is a moving first-hand testimony to the suffering, courage, and faith of women during the French Revolution. The Benedictines of Cambrai were placed under house arrest in October 1793 and subsequently conveyed in open carts across France to prison in Compiégne. Sharing similar fates with other women religious during the French Revolution, the Benedictines remained there in appalling conditions for 18 months during which time four of their number died. Their experiences during this time and the account of their difficult journey to refuge in England was recounted by one of their number, Ann Teresa Partington, immediately after the events.
