Healthy Aging

Abstract

Human skin is amazing and beautiful. Like many body systems, human skin changes with increasing age. Some of these changes are intrinsic, but because our skin is what separates us from the environment we live in, our skin is also exposed to many potentially damaging environmental factors. These intrinsic and extrinsic factors put older patients at greater risk for certain skin conditions. Some of these conditions pose little medical threat and are best assessed with regard to their cosmetic impact. These conditions or findings include solar lentigines, seborrheic keratoses, seborrheic dermatitis, and rosacea.

Some treatment options may help prevent and/or reduce the impact of age-related changes on the cosmetic appearance of older skin. An older person’s confidence, as well as their willingness and interest in social engagement are determined, in part, on their external appearance.
