Computer-Aided Design: Prototyping and Manufacturing (Pectus Excavatum and Poland Syndrome)

  • Chapter
Pectus Excavatum and Poland Syndrome Surgery

Abstract

Thoracic malformations have for many years been the subject of research with regard to surgical reconstruction. Many different surgical techniques have been proposed by different authors. Filling by prosthetic surgery is a simple and minimally invasive technique and offers very good results. However, the manufacture of the prostheses remains a problem, the implant being produced in accordance with the visible deformation of the skin and not that of the surgical plane where it will be placed. Thanks to the evolution of computer science and computer-aided design (CAD) techniques, we present here the treatment of congenital malformations of the ribcage such as Pectus Excavatum and Poland syndrome by the use of custom-made prostheses made of silicone elastomer, made by CAD taking into account precisely the deformation of the surgical plane.
