Abstract

The massive weight loss patient consultation begins with a comprehensive history of weight loss, including greatest and lowest weights. This information provides important insight into the health of the patient prior to surgery. This chapter provides further details about the consultation including past medical history, surgical history, nutrition, lifestyle, and medical comorbidities. Optimizing patients prior to surgery can avoid post-operative complications and disappointment for both the patient and surgeon. Patient safety includes managing expectations as well as potential complications such as need for transfusion, delayed wound healing, and blood clots. Preparation for challenging recoveries is also discussed.
