Definition
The term Participatory Development originates from international development practice and was established to give greater opportunities to have a voice for those who were intended to benefit from development projects. In the context of Participatory Development, the World Bank defines participation as “a process by which people—especially disadvantaged people—can exercise influence over policy formulation, design alternatives, investment choices, management, and monitoring of development interventions in their communities” (Bhatnagar and Williams 1992, p. 7). The Development Assistance Committee of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) defines Participatory Development as “a process by which people take an active and influential hand in shaping decisions that affect their lives” (OECD 1997, p. 22).
