Ce chapitre traite aussi bien des carcinomes basocellulaires, des carcinomes spinocellulaires que des carcinomes cutanés rares. Le cancer de la peau est considéré comme une épidémie en émergence surtout chez les Caucasiens : selon les sources de l’American Cancer Society (1999–2008 Facts and Figures), la moitié des nouveaux cancers sont des cancers de la peau et un million de nouveaux cas sont diagnostiqués chaque année aux États-Unis. Aux États-Unis, l’incidence du cancer de la peau est dix fois plus grande au Sud qu’au Nord. De même, l’incidence est plus grande en Australie et en Nouvelle-Zélande qu’en Angleterre [54]. Quatre-vingt pour cent de ces nouveaux cancers de la peau sont des carcinomes basocellulaires, 16 % sont des carcinomes spinocellulaires et 4 % sont des mélanomes.
