Mesoscale Structure of the Arizona Monsoon Using Remotely Sensed Data

Abstract

Some preliminary results using satellite data to describe mesoscale disturbances in the Arizona Monsoon are presented. In particular, we consider the structure of the monsoon boundary, which is essentially a front-like feature separating the Atlantic and Pacific subtropical highs. In addition, we show some preliminary evidence of disturbances that develop along this boundary from the shear present in that boundary. It is believed that the circulation associated with this boundary, and the disturbances that develop along it, as well as disturbances of other origins may be responsible for much of the summer precipitation in Arizona.
