Abstract

The effects of the kernel function error (KFE) on satellite temperature retrievals have been carried out by using Tikhonov-Twomey and Bayes methods for the theoretical study. The comparisons show that the Bayes method has a better results than Tikhonov-Twomey. The systematic and random errors arising from KFE are analyzed. The KFE that is propagated into the solutions is mainly in the form of biased (systematic) errors, and is the inherent cause of instability in inverse problems. In general, the effect of the KFE on the accuracy of the temperature profiles can be estimated, and also can be removed by using a proper algorithm.
