Salvage Esophagectomy for Persistent Disease After Definitive Chemoradiotherapy

Abstract

The optimal management of locally advanced cancer of the esophagus remains controversial. Given recent advances in the results of combined concurrent chemoradiation, medical and radiation oncologists are dubious about the additional benefit of surgical resection in patients that respond to non-surgical therapy. However, despite a perceived complete local-regional response, many patients will manifest persistent or recurrent disease that is potentially resectable. This chapter aims to discuss the feasibility and pitfalls of opting for salvage esophagectomy.
