Abstract
The definitions and prevalence of anal incontinence and constipation are discussed. The anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology of bowel motility and sphincter control are reviewed. The relationship between posterior compartmental prolapse, rectal prolapse, and uterovaginal prolapse is discussed.
