Abstract
Cadaveric studies measuring up to 63% narrowing of the stenotic spine with extension suggests that intraspinal conductions in the cauda equina might be delayed by extension. In this chapter, we examine delays in H-reflexes brought about by extension and then use this delay as an estimate of the clinical significance of patients’ stenosis. This is useful in determining how great a factor the stenosis is when it is accompanied by a herniated disc, for it helps clinicians decide which of two conditions should be the chief focus of therapy.
