Abstract

Renal transplantation has become the preferred method for renal replacement for appropriate candidates with endstage renal disease (ESRD). It is associated with an improved quality of life and patient survival when compared with similar patients with ESRD but on dialysis. There have been improvements in patient care and immunosupression that have led to excellent outcomes. One-year graft survival for live-donor kidney recipients is 90-95%, and for deceased donor recipients is 85-90%. Overall, 1-yr patient survival is 95%.
