Prevention of Alcohol-Related HIV Risk Behavior

Definition

HIV continues to be a major global public health concern. In order to stem the epidemic, prevention efforts must increase; programs targeting high-risk populations and behaviors are essential. Alcohol use is practiced and accepted worldwide. Alcohol is known to reduce inhibition and has been associated with increased risk-taking behaviors. Identifying strategies to prevent alcohol-related HIV risk-taking behaviors is one way to potentially decrease the spread of HIV.

Alcohol consumption is a common practice among all races, ethnicities, and cultures worldwide. Alcohol is responsible for approximately 4% of all deaths and 5% of the global burden of disease; low-income countries and poor populations are disproportionately affected (Beaglehole and Bonita 2010). Drinking patterns vary and include daily use, heavy drinking (more than 1–2 drinks per day), and binge drinking (more than 4–5 drinks on one occasion) (CDC 2014).
