Abstract

This chapter outlines the author’s role as ecology program director with the National Science Foundation during the early 1980s, when he recommended funding for the Allerton Park Workshop held in Piatt County, Illinois, from 25 to 27 April 1983. This workshop became the catalyst and a milestone in the establishment of landscape ecology in North America.
