Abstract
Every family physician providing care to women of childbearing age should have an understanding of the effect that various medical conditions can have on pregnancy. Pregnancy has significant effects on the progression of many medical conditions; medical conditions coexisting with pregnancy can adversely affect pregnancy outcomes if not treated adequately and judiciously. The role of the family physician begins at preconception, advising patients with significant medical conditions, like diabetes and chronic hypertension, to ensure adequate control before planning a pregnancy. This chapter will address many of these medical conditions (see Table 1).
