Spironolactone: Hydrochlorothiazide

  • Chapter
TOP 200

Abstract

The diuretic effect of spironolactone is due to its action as an aldosterone antagonist. Hydrochlorothiazide promotes the excretion of sodium and water mainly by inhibiting their reabsorption in the cortical diluting segment of the renal tubule. Aldactazide lowers systolic and diastolic blood pressure in many patients with hypertension even when aldosterone secretion is within normal limits.
