Abstract
1883 was a year of commanding practical victories in science and technology: Robert Koch devised a method for inoculating people against anthrax, Edison was finishing his design of the first U.S. hydroelectric plant in Wisconsin, and British scientist Sir Joseph Swan produced the first synthetic fiber.
