Abstract
Frauds and serious controversies in science, discussed in the previous chapter, can destroy careers, or can quickly transform what seems like success into failure. Beyond these career-damaging crises, however, there are other categories of events or attitudes which result in mediocrity and failure. Prominent among them are burnout, fade-out, and other aberrant behavior patterns. This chapter is a brief guided tour through some of these shadowy back alleys of science—all in the interest of a balanced presentation.
Burnout: A Nonproblem for Most Scientists; Fade-Out: A Real Problem for Many Scientists; The Many Faces of Marginal Scientists: Case Studies in Waste Accumulation
