Overview of Biomedical Issues in Autism

Neurobiological Issues in Autism

Part of the book series: Current Issues in Autism ((CIAM))

Abstract

It has become a tradition, in papers attempting an overview or integrative analysis of issues in autism, to start out with a few protective remarks concerning the extreme difficulty of the task, and the problems of the current state of affairs that prevent a successful effort. The authors are then set free to roam and forage as they will, relatively protected from criticism. We shall not deviate from such a formidable and effective tradition. It is one of the advantages of a maintenance of sameness (which has a better adaptive connotation than the corollary resistance to change, which implies rigidity; Ciaranello, Vandenberg, & Anders, 1982).
