Serotyping Distribution and Antimicrobial Resistance of Streptococcus pneumoniae Isolated in Brazil (1992–1996)

  • Chapter
Streptococci and the Host

Abstract

Pneumococcal infections are among the leading causes of human morbidity and mortality worldwide. For many years, pneumococci were susceptible to penicillin, cephalosporins, erythromycin, and sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim. Moreover, the emergence and dissemination of strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae resistant to penicillin and other antimicrobials have become a major concern for therapy of pneumococcal infections and created the need for continuous epidemiological surveillance1. With the increasing antimicrobial resistance, prevention of pneumococcal infections is preeminent, and vaccination strategies offer an important approach for the control of drug-resistant S. pneumoniae. The purpose of the present study was to obtain additional information on the distribution of capsular serotypes and antimicrobial susceptibilities of S. pneumoniae strains isolated in Brazil.
