Abstract

Invasive infection with group A streptococci (GAS) usually occurs in single, isolated cases but time/place clusters of infection featuring single or multiple M-serotypes have been reported in community settings from the UK and elsewhere in recent years3,6. Additionally, nation-wide increases in the prevalence of certain serotypes (notably M-types 1 and 3) in several parts of the world have been associated with increased reports of serious infection1, 2, 7. We describe two clusters of invasive GAS infection in the UK, principally featuring M-type 1, which mark a resurgence of clinical disease at a time of increasing prevalence of the type.
