Abstract

Language function must be assessed in the evaluation of any child with suspected developmental delay. Language probably is the single most important cognitive achievement before 5 years of age, and it provides the foundation for later accomplishments. Language delays are often the first indication or marker of underlying cognitive impairment; assessment techniques useful to the primary-care physician are listed in Table 3.1. The majority of these assessment instruments can be administered in the physician’s office. It should be emphasized that many of the developmental assessment techniques cited in Chapter 2 also include language components.
