Differentiation within Campylobacter jejuni and C. coli by PCR-RFLP of the Intergenic Region between the flaA and flaB Genes

  • Chapter
Campylobacters, Helicobacters, and Related Organisms

Abstract

Campylobacter is now recognised as one of the most common causes of bacterial gastroenteritis in humans in developed countries. The most frequently isolated organisms from these cases are C. jejuni and C. coli, with foods of animal origin thought to be the main sources of infection. However, the epidemiology of Campylobacter has been hampered by a lack of discriminatory techniques which are essential to identify vehicles of infection to humans, and sources of contamination of foods. The aim of this project was to investigate the DNA sequence divergence within the intergenic sequence between the flagellin genes, fla A and flaB, as a means of rapidly identifying sub-species within C. jejuni and C. coli.
