Abstract

Adolescent health care is a relatively new medical subspecialty (Shearin, 1977) in the United States. The first adolescent medicine program was established in Boston by Dr. Roswell Gallagher in 1951. The Society for Adolescent Medicine was formed in 1968, and the American Academy of Pediatrics only recently created a section on adolescent medicine. Publications on adolescent medicine have dramatically increased in recent years, and there has been growing federal recognition (Hutchins, 1980).
